Why Your SME Needs a Cloud Strategy, Not Just Cloud Bills
· 6 min · Cloud
Cloud computing stopped being a luxury reserved for large enterprises a long time ago. For an SME, it has become a strategic lever — cheaper infrastructure, real scalability, and a security posture you could never staff on your own. But most of the companies I meet are stuck between two bad stories: paying for rented servers they barely understand, or migrating everything at once because a vendor promised a discount.
The concrete benefits
Flexibility, cost reduction, and rapid scalability are the usual headlines, and for a small business they’re real. What matters more is capacity planning: you stop buying hardware for your best month and paying for it in your worst ones. A sales peak becomes a line on an invoice instead of a write-off.
The mistake I see most often
Jumping straight to a full migration. Five services moved in a weekend, none documented, nobody trained — and three months later the cloud bill has doubled while the old server is still running “in case”.
Start with an audit, never with a full migration.
How to begin
First, map what you actually run: which services, what data, who depends on them, what would break. Then pick the least sensitive, most self-contained candidate and move it first. Measure for a month. Then repeat, at a pace your team can absorb.
The migration isn’t the project. The strategy — knowing what to move, in what order, and how you’ll run it afterwards — is the project.
